Lenny blenny and Penny Blenny.
During our holiday-at-home spent a fair amount of time in two very familiar yet excellent places.
The wood behind our cottage, where we discovered small clouds of butterflies during the golden hour and Minnie the dog (now 15 and in her sprightly dotage) pretended to be a top predator as ever, but in reality scampered about a bit and burgled blackberries from the bushes.
We burgled some too of course…
The garden and my shed/studio. It’s a small box of holiday at the end of the garden. We always feel relaxed in this little space. There’s been lego-ing, barbeque-scoffing, lolling, napping and sheltering from rainstorms up there. It may not be a beach hut but watching the dog dozing on the lawn next to my cutting patch (whilst eating a chunk of cake and sipping a gin) was almost as good as a view of the sea. Almost.
Finally I have been on a small baking odyssey during our break. I made scones for only the second time ever. Have you ever eaten a dense, baking powder-bitter scone in a teashop? I’ve had plenty and having made tragic pancake-like scones that tasted as though they were made entirely from neutrons on my first try 15 years ago I felt the scone fear. I tried a recipe involving a squeeze of lemon in the milk, added zest to the mix and used cranberries instead of rasins and they were a light fluffy joy with a delicious crust. In fact we had them for breakfast the next day, after which the entire batch had disappeared.
Despite my reservations we do feel refreshed and ready for the *whispers* A-word which I can feel creeping round the corner.
Have you ever had a staycation? What did you get up to?
"..burgled blackberries from the bushes.." What a wonderful turn of phrase! Lovely writing once again Em, always a joy x
we did the same staycation hols, just enjoying time together in the west country and cornish coast, sometimes you realize the best places are right on your doorstep. there has been much fun pebble skimming, beach combing and enjoying wonderful countryside walks. have you noticed there seems a wonderful lot of blackberries this year? ;0) lovely post x
Sounds perfect – no hassle at the airport, no insurance and changing money, no disappointing places to stay which don't quite meet up to expectations …what's not to like> Yes we do sometimes have a staycation and we always "come back" refreshed and happy and it doesn't cost much either! Love the photos.
I too had a staycation, although not with as much scampering as yours! There's a lot to be said for home comforts and relaxation. It's years since I went to west runton beach, spent hours there as a child!
When I was a child, the problem was always winkling my Dad out of the house, so we had more staycations than anything else. And my husband is just the same….
That sounds perfect. Although I am enjoying our lovely Italian road trip there is always a pert of me that misses the comfort and familiarity of home.
A holiday at home is a wonderful thing, it looks like everyone had a lovely time. The scones look especially delicious, and I love the idea of relaxing in the garden. I definitely need to try this. CJ xx
your holiday at home sounds lovely xxx
We spent summer at home last year with some days out and a lot of pootling about. It meant that we got to appreciate things on our doorstep more. Your visit to the seaside looks like fun, and you can't beat a bit of blackberrying at this time of year. Your scones are a triumph too!

You really know how to staycation in style Mrs Pebs. We've had lots of lazy mornings and pottering days this summer and it's been what we all needed. Although I'm determined to squeeze one more beach trip in before school starts next Thursday!
Lovely to have a staycation, we're having one as well this year. I love to be at home and really relax in comfort and have the luxury to do crafty projects I can't always get around too due to work. Sounds like yours was really lovely and worth repeating again some time 🙂 Especially love the sound of the garden getaway and seaside visit 🙂 Plus all the baking sound delicious! Safxxx
A lovely read and photos Emma, loved the reference to Miss Matty.
Have crocheted your cow parsley in all sorts of yarn and colours and they're beautiful! thanks again for the pattern.
Staying put and enjoying a slower pace at home brings many bonuses as opposed to the stresses holidays can so often bring.

Emma, your staycation sounds like a lovely, relaxed, easy going time. Since I live in a place that many folks name as a holiday destination, sometimes I actually feel as if I am on vacation all the time…well, perhaps not while I am at work. But even then I get to meet lots of folks visiting the city from other places, so that's a bit like traveling in place, too.
Beautiful photographs of your staycation! xo
Staycations can be lovely and sometimes much more relaxing than going away. We had a staycation a few years ago and refer to it as our 'week of Sundays' 🙂
Husband and I had a staycation a few years ago by ourselves… After we shipped the boys to myself… We totally loved it!
gan good job, this article is very interesting to note, cool deh,, of course we have new insights that we get after reading it, thanx yah 🙂
